Review: Home Sweet Home PS4 PSVR

Though the plot — which shouldn’t take more than six or so hours — might be lost on some people who don’t choose to explore, Home Sweet Home actually offers a surprisingly deep amount of backstory. The game takes the time to explain the lore that comes into play through environmental storytelling. Of particular interest and importance is the legend of the haunting “Preta”, a restless and vengeful spirit that is forever hungry and thirsty. The entire game is steeped in Thai imagery, from the newspaper clippings to the graffiti on the walls, and the unique setting adds to the sense of displacement and disorientation for western players. Home Sweet Home is a great PSVR game and a good regular title. The mystery surrounding the story and unique set pieces mix incredibly well with superb horror elements.

The use of a review code does not affect my judgement of the game. Home Sweet Home uses VR’s ability to represent scale in some impressive ways, with one Preta in particular that looms over the player, towering impossibly into the sky. The game nonetheless does its best to keep players off balance, as the environments often shift and change around the player as you move through them. In a move that I recognized from Layers of Fear (another recent scare-fest), floorplans often rearrange themselves behind the player. After one level that I had meticulously explored, I was shocked to see that I had only found three of eighteen collectable items. While I thought that I had been picking my way slowly through the environments for clues, I was clearly looking in the wrong places.

Home Sweet Home Review – House of Horrors (PS4/PSVR)

The sounds, ambiance, creature designs, and the mystery in which Tim finds himself were certainly well crafted. What’s more are the collectibles you can pick up on your journey. Most will be incredibly easy to find, but that may have been the point.

At the same time, he’ll find himself being hunted by malevolent spirits and beings. To be fair, the game's controls work well for the most part. And micromanaging team members can be enjoyable when time is of the essence, which it oftentimes is -- you'll have a pre-set number of days to finish the job and the clock is always ticking. In this way, the game reminds me of the Wii title Order Up! You may be asking… surely I have some way of defending myself from the games threats? The answer to that is no, all you have to make your way through is game is a flashlight, bringing a more intense feeling to the game.

The game holds up alongside the likes of Amnesia and Outlast and could quite possibly rule the horror world if continued correctly. Home Sweet Home is a crucial buy for anyone interested in games of this caliber. You can bet I’ll be eagerly awaiting part two in the series. Killer Frequency is a first-person horror adventure that puts you in the shoes of Forrest Nash, a late-night radio host whose callers are... Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney provide the film's biggest bright spot as the put-upon couple victimized by a child who lives in a much nicer house than they do. But unlike the clear-cut good-versus-evil pleasure of the first film's righteous violence meted upon nasty criminals, it's not clear who's meant to enjoy seeing decent, economically squeezed people being tortured.

Tim can run, crouch, use a flashlight, and pick things up in order to proceed. To find an escape, he’ll need to do all of these things, plus hide, in order to avoid dangers and solve puzzles or situations. Unfortunately, most solutions will be to find an item that grants access to a path and move to the next complication. Home Sweet Home is pretty linear and most doors, stairways, and windows will be inaccessible to Tim. You’ll always have a clear picture on what your surroundings are in any given level, but some of the puzzles are not very clear. Home Sweet Home follows Tim as he wakes up in a house with no clear memory of where he was before today.

Even without X-Enhancements, this offers some of the best visuals I’ve seen in a horror survival for a long time. The shadows which cast over the blood soaked walls projected from the bright florescent lights, add an element of terror that really works against a modern setting, which in my view creates a far more scarier atmosphere. After a long night filled with mourning and sorrow over the recent disappearance of his wife, protagonist Tim awakens to find himself in a strange, dilapidated building instead of the comfort of his own home. Naturally confused, he desperately begins to search for a way out while attempting to solve questions that could lead to answers regarding his wife’s disappearance.

Despite its flaws, however, the game utilizes its gameplay strengths to create a fun survival horror game with unique Thai personality. Home Sweet Home is a worthy addition to any horror fan’s playlist and leaves us asking for more. It feels very tacked on and undercooked, with the image often blurry to the point where I was squinting at things to see, then UI elements would pop up so close to my face it made my eyes hurt immediately. The image also does a poor job of overtaking the PSVR’s screens, meaning it often felt like I was looking through some sort of grimy film the whole time.

The movie features mock commercials during its introduction to create the sensation of channel surfing during the middle of the night when you just happen to stumble upon this delirious midnight madness. Begos shot the movie on 16mm where the film grain and bleeding colors only enhance the experience. Steve Moore’s score is equally effective and punctuates every grisly set piece.

It is therefore no surprise that Home Sweet Home is available on PS VR, and I salute anyone who is brave enough to try that out. When enabled, off-topic review activity will be filtered out. • Diversity of Gameplay – Puzzles and investigations are integrated into the game for variety of gameplay.

Home Sweet Home Review Summary

Thankfully, Home Sweet Home has no problem with this, as the sound in the game is likely its best facet. Home Sweet Home is a first-person horror adventure game based on Thai myths and beliefs. After his wife’s disappearance, Tim awakens to find himself in a strange, dilapidated building instead of the comfort of his home.

Home Sweet Home Alone takes its sweet time, filling its first hour with an endless round of "Oh it's him from SNL / that HBO sitcom," as we meet multiple families and multiple kids who absolutely do not matter at all. • Challenging Gameplay – Focus on stealth gameplay which requires player’s skill to overcome. Progression is occasionally gated off by some insidious puzzles. A few of the puzzles are extremely clever, requiring the player to search the environment for clues and then perform some mental gymnastics to come up with the solutions. Most, however, simply require the player to acquire a nearby object to interact with an environmental barrier (including one game of “find the keys” in Tim’s house that had me ripping my hair out). This is frankly an awful way to start the game, but players should push through this sequence.

As he stumbles through the opening level with the goal of escaping, he remembers he had a girlfriend/wife named Jane. Just then, a female figure appears with dark pale skin, shoulder length, black hair, crazy eyes, and blood all over her mouth. She also has the least threatening weapon imaginable in the form of a long box cutter, but this spirit definitely uses it to make your skin crawl. Christmas Bloody Christmas, finally finds a unique angle on the killer Santa stereotype by turning the seasonal threat into a robotic Terminator-like predator. It’s Begos’ strongest film, but also one of the most exciting Christmas horror movies in years.

The excellent horror elements are brought straight to you, and the ability to lean or duck made me check every dark corner. This caused my eyes to dart around at the slightest of sounds, to the point where I could only play half of my five hour playtime in the headset. If that doesn’t indicate a good horror experience, I don’t know what does.
